IUFRO Structure

IUFRO consists of several bodies under the IUFRO Statutes and Internal Regulations.

The International Council meets when a Congress is in session or at other times if the need arises. (ARTICLE VI: International Council, Procedure 6)

The voting Board is composed of the President, who only votes to break a tie, two Vice-Presidents, the Immediate Past President (ex officio, i.e. by virtue of office or position), the Division Coordinators, the IUFRO Headquarters Host Country Representative nominated by the IUFRO Member Organizations of the host country, and up to five Presidentfs Nominees (PN). Presidentfs Nominees will be selected to strive for a regional, gender and scientific balance and their tasks will be approved by the Board. Finally the Executive Director, the Chair of the Congress Organizing Committee (COC), who is nominated by the Member Organizations of the host country of the Congress and appointed by the IUFRO Board, and the Chair of the Congress Scientific Committee (CSC) are non-voting ex officio Board members. Task Force Coordinators as well as Coordinators of Special Programs, Projects and IUFRO-led International Initiatives are non-voting members of the Board. (ARTICLE VII: Board, Composition 7)

The Union is a non-profit, non-governmental scientific organization open to organizations and individuals involved in forest research and forest-related sciences. At present its Headquarters is located in Vienna, Austria. (ARTICLE I: Title, Location and Scope of Action 2)

The Union's field of scientific activity is spread over a number of Divisions. (ARTICLE XI: Divisions, Function 1)

IUFRO Task Forces are established on a temporary basis during each 5-year IUFRO Board term to advance inter]disciplinary cooperation in forest research fields that span two or more IUFRO Divisions. Their focus is on emerging key issues that are of great interest to policy makers and groups inside and outside the forest sector, and contribute to international processes and activities. Since 1991, over 30 IUFRO Task Forces have brought together scientists, policy-makers and other stakeholders to conduct innovative work across a broad range of topics (for more information on these earlier Task Forces please visit:

Task Forces, Special Programs, Projects and Chapters may be established and terminated by the President, subject to Board approval. (ARTICLE XIII: Task Forces, Special Programs, Projects, Chapters and IUFRO-led International Initiatives 1)
