Greeting from the President

presidentForests, which are the main research targets of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) of the Forest Research and Management Organization (FRMO), are required to sustainably fulfill multiple functions, including the supply of forest products and water, as well as land conservation and recreation, and the maintenance and improvement of the environment on a global scale. To this end, we, together with the Forest Management Center and the Forest Insurance Center, are working as one of National Research and Development Agencies to meet the various requirements relating to forestry, and timber industries, forest tree breeding, as well as ecosystem services.
In realizing the missions above, we firstly established the Gender Equality Office in 2008 to attain better workplace. Subsequently, we renamed it the Diversity Promotion Office in 2016 based on the clear recognition that diversity in terms of age, gender, race/ethnicity, marriage, sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as the individuality, values, attitudes and beliefs, is essentially important in organizational management. At present, the Office is promoting the diversity at FRMO in cooperation with external advisors and the Diversity Promotion Committee, which includes (1) the participation of diverse human resources, (2) raising awareness, (3) work-life balance, (4) support for career development, and (5) collaboration with local communities and external organizations. This is the direction that has become a major international trend toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving human well-being as well as the multifaceted functions of forests.
In order to create new innovations through the mobility of researchers and the exchange of human resources, we will strive to create a work environment in which diverse human resources can fully exercise their abilities, for example, by improving work-life balance and further promoting the cross-appointment system, and so on. Through various seminars, awareness-raising activities and the operation of the Diversity Support Office, a consortium for promoting diversity, we will work in cooperation with the local community and relevant organizations for realizing a more diverse society. We would like to work together for ensuring that our efforts have a synergistic effect on the work of the Organization and the Institute.

Tohru Nakashizuka (Toru Asano)
President of the Forest Research and Management Organization
