Engineered Timber and Joints Laboratory was carried out in 2001 in April, ｊoining two research laboratory, was born by an independent administrative institution of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute.

Materials and performance laboratory were studying the strength of the wood around the lumber, the mother is a joint laboratory that was doing research of the junction which is indispensable in order to create a structure of wood.

The laboratory of Engineered Timber Joints (ETJ: but that is called Timber Jointing Laboratory; offically) was established in october in 1988 when the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) was largely re-organized. The origin of ETJ was the Laboratory of Industrial Application of Wood Products where the timber joints had been studied before then. The research range of ETJ is everything which is wedding timber mechanically and also relates joints and connections in timber construction.

We are mainly researching on joints of timber structure made by axial members and its structural performance.

材料接合研究室は、2001年(平成12年)4月に行われた、森林総合研究所の独立行政法人化によって生まれました。その母体は、製材を中心として木材の強度を研究していた材料性能研究室と、木材で構造体を造るために欠かせない接合の研究をしていた接合研究室です。

材料性能研究室は、1978年(昭和53年)3月の林業試験場本場筑波研究学園都市移転後の改組時に、木材部材料科強度研究室から分れた研究室の一つであり、他には構造性能研究室と性能開発研究室があります。材料強度研究は、1906年(明治39年)に大蔵省臨時建築部が農林省山林局林業試験場に国産樹種の建築材料としての調査を依頼したことから始まっていますが、現在では木造住宅に使われる実大製材品の強度研究を中心として、木材の強度的性質とそれに関する研究を行っています。

接合研究室は、1988年(昭和63年)10月に行われた、林業試験場から森林総合研究所へ改組時に新しく発足した研究室で、その母体は当時接合部の研究をしていた性能開発研究室、その源流は木材の新用途開発を担うべく存在した木材部材質改良科応用研究室にもあります。接合研究室は、木材を機械的に結び付ける技術を中心に、木質系構造物の継手・仕口・接合部に関係するもの全てを対象に研究に取り組んできました。

こうした歴史を持つ材料接合研究室ですが、現在では土木分野など従来以外の用途へも木材利用の範囲は拡がり、それと共に担当する研究範囲が拡がっています。主として軸組部材とその接合部、それらからなる構造物についての研究を行っていますが、カバーする範囲は、木材とそれを機械的に結び付ける技術、そして木質系構造物の部材と継手・仕口・接合部に関係するもの全てです。
