Two sub-species are available; Azuma toads with large tympanic membranes and small Japanese common toads. They are brown in color, and have parotid glands that emit venom. Their ""ku ku" calls can be heard in the Tama Forest Science Garden around April when they lay their string-like spawn on the surface of water. |
