Commentary |
A small evergreen tree commonly found on the forest floor. The leaves are thick, leathery, and shiny, with serrated edges. Dioecious. The flowers are vase-shaped, yellow-white, small, and have a strong odor. The stamens in female flowers and the pistils in male flowers are degenerate. It is often used instead of sakaki, which is one of the offerings in the Shinto faith. |
