A perennial woodland plant. It is pure white in its entirety and has no chloroplasts. The leaves are scaly and wrap around the stem, with the flowers hanging downward from the tip of the stem. The stigma has a large purple band, and is surrounded by stamens. The fruit is a sap fruit. There is an underground mass of branching coral-like mycorrhizal roots that depend on fungi for all of their nutrition. |
