Commentary |
A perennial plant that grows in field and mountain woodlands. There are two leaves, with serrated edges. The Buddha flame bract is deep or dark purple in color, and the mouth sticks out like an earlobe, hence the name in Japanese. There are male and female plants, and depending on the plant's nutritional status, it changes sex from male to female or vice versa. It is often seen in the Science Garden during cherry blossom season. |
