A deciduous shrub endemic to Japan that grows along streams in the mountains. It grows about 2 m high, and blooms from summer to fall. The leaves have stiff hairs on both sides. It produces corymbs of about 15 cm in diameter at the ends of its branches. The ornamental flowers are white to light purple, and the hermaphroditic flowers are purple. The Japanese name derives from the inflorescence being spherical before flowering and wrapped in the involucre. |
