Commentary |
The leaves that emerge in the spring are shiny, but soon lose their luster and are often damaged by the time they flower. The flower stalks grow high, with a few broad heart-shaped leaves in the middle. The greenish-white flowers, 15-25 cm long, are arranged horizontally at the end. The calyx and petals form a sturdy tube, and the bees that get inside carry pollen. The fruit is a pod and, when ripe, opens upward and sends out a large number of thin, winged, flat seeds, which are borne on the wind. |
