Scientific name

Cardiocrinum cordatum (Thunb.) Makino

Best season

Commentary

The leaves that emerge in the spring are shiny, but soon lose their luster and are often damaged by the time they flower. The flower stalks grow high, with a few broad heart-shaped leaves in the middle. The greenish-white flowers, 15-25 cm long, are arranged horizontally at the end. The calyx and petals form a sturdy tube, and the bees that get inside carry pollen. The fruit is a pod and, when ripe, opens upward and sends out a large number of thin, winged, flat seeds, which are borne on the wind.
