Commentary |
A dioecious perennial creeping plant that grows in moderately well-lit torests and at torest edges. Elongated yams grow underground, but in spring, when the yams sprout vines, the stored nutrients are used up, and new yams form in fall to store nutrients anew. In summer, the male inflorescence becomes erect and produces white flowers, and the female inflorescence hangs down and produces smaller flowers. The seeds have round wings and become airborne in the wind. In addition to seeds, propagules are produced on the axils for propagation. |
